For years I have been saying that the name misophonia does not fit the lived experiences of persons with sensory dysregulation, even those with auditory triggers. Persons with misophonia are not experiencing hatred because they are not experiencing a cognitive event at all. Rather, misophonia is a neurophysiological phenomenon where sounds that are otherwise non-aversive cause a fight-flight-freeze response. This is more in line with sensory diversity and neurodivergence than it is with any cognitive condition.

With this in mind… The International Misophonia Foundation has launched a campaign for misophonia research and awareness on this principle: misophonia is more than hatred of sound.

This campaign features awareness products that directly share the message, and all proceeds go immediately back to the IMF (a 501 c 3 in Missouri). The IMF is also accepting direct tax-deductible donations to help foster awareness and research missions.
